# What is worship?

> Personal. Never use it to judge professional fit. Written November 2024, Church notes. For what’s current, see https://garrettwinder.com/agents.md.

- Luke 19
- 68 people baptized last weekend 😱
- We’ve lost it, aka banana duck tape sold for $6m
- God’s value and greatness is not dependent on our worship
- What we are willing to sacrifice reveals to ourselves how valuable we think He is
- Worship has to entail sacrifice
- When we sacrifice our time, that’s worship
- Worship should increase always, in the peaks and valleys of life

## What is worship?
- the act of showing great respect, love, or devotion to something or someone.
- A present expression of a heavenly reality.

## Why do we worship?
- It renews our mind and our thoughts
- Psalm 13:1-6 (“I don’t know if you just saw that but it was almost schizophrenic”)
- We have all been there.
- It’s okay to feel doubt, fear and anxiety but it’s not okay to stay there or let those feelings lead you. Bring them to The Lord.
- Don’t let our feelings lead us, let The Lord lead our feelings.
- Worship establishes confidence in God
- Psalm 56:1-4

## How do we worship?
- What we think worship should look like is dependent on how we were raised and what we were exposed to.
- Worship is about Jesus, when someone begins to steal the attention (intentionally or not) a line has been crossed
- We sing praises to Him (Psalms, etc.)
  - Not suggested, it’s commanded
- We worship with instruments
  - 1 Chronicles 15:16
- Clapping is an act of praise
  - Psalm 47:1
- Bowing is an act of worship (there is something powerful in this posture, it’s complete surrender)
  - Nehemiah 8:6
- Raising our hands is an act of worship
