Lost, Believer, Disciple or Disciple Maker?
Filed under #churchnotes on January 05, 2025Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
— Mark 8:27-29 (NIV)
- Here’s what the world has to offer, and here’s me.
- Who do we say Jesus is?
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
— Mark 8:29-32 (NIV)
But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
— Mark 8:33-34 (NIV)
- There is sacrifice involved in denying ourselves and picking up our cross daily.
- The cross is Jesus getting beat, carrying the cross to his death, then dying on it for us.
For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
— Mark 8:35-37 (NIV)
- 100% chance that we are going to die, so don’t live for yourself and your agenda.
- Earthly possessions mean nothing in eternity.
If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
— Mark 8:38 (NIV)
- Desiring worldly things over Jesus is adulterous.
Four places we can be
1. The lost
- Come and see.
- Sin doesn’t make you bad it makes you DEAD
2. The believer
- Come and follow Me.
- Get Baptist, do some stuff.
3. The disciple
- Come and grow.
- Serve other people, grow in prayer and fasting. Fasting say no to something to say yes to Jesus
- We cloud our mind with so many worldly things
- Tithing is having faith and trust in our God
4. The Disciple maker
- God desires all of us to be in this spot.
- The gospel never gets old
- Going deep is leading people to Jesus
- Come and die.
If we aren’t diffing into the word and continuing to learn the word then we will never know as much scripture as the devil.
