I am slowly transferring my sermon notes to this webpage to make them more accessible.
Are you wonder-filled?
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” — Isaiah 9:6 (ESV)
We are going to study this verse for 3 weeks, starting with ‘Wonderful Counselor’.
Wonderful Counselor
- He has perspective
- When this was written to the Israelites by Isaiah, Israel was two kingdoms; North and Juda.
- North kinda bad, Juda good
- Lots of chaos: North, Juda, Assyrians, etc. earthly kings (good kings, bad kings, evil kings, good kings)
- This is where they were when Isaiah wrote 9:6
- Jesus is a wonderful gift that we do not deserve
- Lots of types of wonderful in the original languages, but we only have one. This particular ‘Wonderful’ translation: convey something extraordinary, miraculous and above human understanding and can only be attributed to God.
- Jesus is Wonderful
- He has a plan for our life
- He is not wonderful because of the outcomes go the way we want them to, he’s wonderful period.
- Our responsibility is to believe he can and he will (until we are given the outcome)
- And on the other side, we believe he is wonderful even if he doesn’t.
- Jesus is our counselor
- Advice with wisdom and authority, providing divine solutions
- We have direct access via The Word (the bible)
- John 1:1,14 (FOURTEEEEEEEEN)
“I heard this week in a sermon that we should have a verse for EVERYTHING we are walking - I woke up thinking about it and then he said it 3 times.” - Em
Surround ourself with people and counsel that is found in the word, that’s how he guides us.
When grounded and living in the word, storms and valleys should send us running to Jesus and not elsewhere.
